What is Smithe Kote?

This is our optional stain protector for upholstered furniture.

How is it made?

Smite Kote is a water based product made with certifiably Green organic compounds.

How is it applied?

Smithe Kote goes on prior to delivery, in a careful application process which consists of a fine pressurized spray.

What does Smithe Kote protect against?

• Food
• Beverage
• Pet bodily fluids
• Human bodily fluids

What do you do if a stain happens?

1. Treat stains immediately with the care kit provided at the time of purchase.
2. If the stain persists, contact us within 2 days to arrange for a free in-home cleaning.
3. If the stain cannot be removed, Smithe will replace the stained upholstered panel.
4. If the fabric or leather is unavailable, Smithe will reupholster the entire piece in a comparable grade at no additional charge.

Is there anything Smithe Kote doesn’t cover?

There are a few exclusions. The protector does not cover everyday soiling from normal use, multiple stains, repetitive soiling, or stains not attended to properly. It also does not cover aging such as fading or a general soiling over time. To be covered, stains must be on the above list, or reported within two days. For a full list of exclusions, consult your Smithe consultant.

How long does Smithe Kote cover you?

Smithe Kote is designed to protect against stains on fabric or leather for 5 years from the date of delivery. Protection is valid to original purchaser only.

Spring is here and that means spring cleaning! Today we’d like to offer more furniture cleaning tips by answering a few customer questions about how to care for your wood furniture from your favorite furniture outlet. Read on to learn more!

Do I need to avoid sun and extreme heat?

Yes! Extreme heat from radiators or heat ducts can cause warping or splitting as well as buckling or delaminating of veneers. Overexposure to sunlight can adversely affect wood finishes, causing cracking and bleaching that are difficult and costly to repair.

What’s the best way to prevent damage?

Some simple things you can do to avoid damage to your wood furniture include the following: applying adhesive felt glides to objects before placing them on tables; use placemats under the plates and hot pads under the serving containers; refrain from setting synthetics, rubber or plastics on the wood finish as they might contain chemicals that will damage the finish; do not leave newspapers or magazines on wood as the ink can bleed onto the finish and into the wood.

What should I do if nail polish remover or perfume is spilled onto the furniture?

Do not blot it off! Wait for the liquid to dry and then rub the area with a fine automotive polishing compound. Afterwards you can apply a fresh coat of polish.

How do I remove candle wax?

First hold an ice cube to the wax to harden it and then blot up the water. When the wax is hard, use a dull plastic spatula to remove it but be careful to not touch the wood. Next, gently scrape away remaining wax, and finally rub the area with furniture polish to replace the protective coating.

How about this gorgeous Chicagoland weather? It feels like spring, and all of us at Walter E. Smithe love it! What does spring mean? Spring cleaning of course! Your friends here at Walter E. Smithe want to remind you to not neglect your furniture during your spring cleaning this year! Whether it’s your living room or bedroom furniture, your reupholstered dining room chairs, or your dining room table, they all need to be cleaned. Today we’ll focus how to clean leather couches.

When you do set out to clean your leather furniture, it is of the utmost importance that you follow our cleaning guidelines in order to be eligible for your warranty coverage. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to call us but here’s a look at what our guidelines for leather consist of.

Damage – while we hope this never happens, we do have some good news. Major stains, minor cuts and abrasions can often be removed for a fee. If you have questions regarding damage to your furniture, contact your warranty services representative for assistance.

Smooth leathers – if you use your couch a great deal, smooth leather is the best choice because it is easier to clean. You should remove dust and minor soiling with a damp cloth once a month, but never use saddle soap.  Contact your warranty services supervisor for further cleaning instructions.

Nubeck and Suede leathers – these are the most absorbent leathers and as a result are the most difficult to clean. Because of this, extreme care should always be practiced! If there is a stain, we have special stain eraser cloths available, but even these can’t remove all stains from suede. In general, suede can’t be washed or cleaned and you should never use a liquid cleaner on your suede leather! To maintain your piece, gently vacuum once a month with the appropriate tool or brush.
